Schools in the borough may be interested in a number of apprenticeship grant programmes currently offering grants of up to £5,000 to local employers.
The #SeeDifferent SME Apprenticeship Support Programme offers grants of £3,000 to local employers who meet the eligibility criteria. All types of apprenticeship are eligible, including administration, digital media, teaching assistants and IT. There is also no age criteria for this scheme, although the school would need to commit to paying the apprentice the National Minimum Wage for age.
Wigan Council's Apprenticeships for Young People (AYP) programme was launched in autumn 2018 and offers grants of between £2,000 and £5,000 to local employers, including schools, who recruit an eligible apprentice and meet the eligibility criteria for the scheme. The AYP programme has been introduced to encourage local employers to recruit apprentices in key priority growth sectors:
It is the type of apprenticeship that meets the criteria, which is where schools in Wigan borough may be able to take advantage of this offer. For schools, appropriate eligible apprenticeships may include:
- Facilities management
- Property maintenance
- Social media
- Digital marketing
- IT infrastructure Technician
For full details of both programmes, visit the Wigan's Business Support webpage where you can also submit an online expression of interest / application for the funding.
To be eligible for these programmes, the school must:
- Have a Wigan base
- Recruit a Wigan resident to the apprenticeship
- Pay National Minimum Wage (not Apprenticeship Wage).
The apprenticeship must be a new role and not used to up-skill an existing member of staff.
